What Does a Certified Translation Cost?
The costs for a certified translation can seem unclear at first glance. Unlike a "shelf" product, there are no simple price lists. The reason for this is that each document is unique and requires individual processing by a qualified, court-sworn translator.
In this guide, we want to offer you full transparency. We explain exactly how prices for certified translations are determined, which factors influence costs, and what guidelines you can expect for typical documents. Our goal at PRO is to give you a clear and fair overview.
Is There a Fixed Price? The Basics of Pricing
There is no blanket answer to the cost question, as each certified translation is an individual, legal document. The price is therefore calculated separately for each project. In Germany, there are common billing models for this:
- Price per Standard Line: Especially in the legal field, billing is often per "standard line" (a standard line with 55 characters including spaces) in the target text. This is a very transparent method for text-heavy documents.
- Flat Rate per Document: For standardized certificates such as a certified translation English-German of a birth certificate or a certified translation Spanish-German of a driver's license, we can often offer a fixed flat rate, as the effort is well calculable.
The 5 Factors That Influence the Price
Each document is different. Therefore, the final price is determined by several key factors that reflect the effort and responsibility of the translator.
1. Text Volume (Number of Lines or Words)
This is the most obvious factor. A two-page contract requires more work than a one-page birth certificate. The text volume, usually counted in standard lines (55 characters) or words, forms the basis for price calculation.
2. Language Combination
Supply and demand determine the market. Common language combinations such as English-German or Spanish-German are often more cost-effective, as there is a larger number of available sworn translators than for rarer languages such as German-Japanese or German-Thai.
3. Subject Area and Complexity
A standardized certificate is easier to translate than a complex medical report or a legal articles of association. The more demanding the technical terminology and the more complex the sentence structure, the more time and expertise the translation requires, which is reflected in the price.
4. Urgency (Express Options)
If a translation is needed very quickly, for example within 24 hours or over the weekend, an express surcharge may apply. This compensates the translator for the need to postpone other projects and work outside regular business hours.
5. Certification Fee and Shipping
The act of certification itself – in which the translator vouches for accuracy with their stamp and signature – is a responsible, legal act. A small certification fee is charged for this. Similarly, the costs for secure postal shipping, usually by registered mail, are taken into account.
Examples of Typical Costs (Guidelines)
To give you a better idea, we have compiled some non-binding price ranges for frequently requested documents here. Please note that these are only estimates. For an accurate quote, we ask you to request an individual calculation.
- Standard Certificate (e.g., Birth Certificate, Marriage Certificate): Since these documents often have a standardized layout, a flat rate is usually possible here. Expect costs between €40 and €70 per page, including certification and shipping.
- Diploma (e.g., High School Diploma, University Degree): A one-page diploma with grade overview is more text-heavy than a certificate and can cost between €50 and €90 depending on density.
- Contract or Legal Document: Here, billing is almost always per standard line in the target text. Prices often start at around €1.20 - €1.85 per standard line, depending on complexity and language combination.
